City of Olympia, Skate Court In Yauger Park
The first park project the PARC Foundation of Thurston County was involved with was the City of Olympia Skate Court.
In the Spring of 1998, a small group of skateboarders and some Olympia businessmen came to the City Council with an idea to build a Skate Court for skateboards. This was to be a private citizens group initiative and City of Olympia joint project. The city agreed to provide half of the estimated $300,000 to develop the Skate Court if the private citizens group would raise the other half of the funds. The Olympia Parks Department started planning for the Skate Court. However, the private citizens group didn’t come together as hoped. At this point, the PARC Foundation, which had just received its non profit 501 (c) (3) status, along with other individuals and volunteer hours donated by Park Staff, raised funds for the project and sought in-kind donations of labor, equipment, and supplies so the the Skate Court could be built.
The campaign spearheaded by the PARC Foundation to raise the matching funds was successful. During the Summer and Fall of 1998 and Spring of 1999, the Olympia Skate Court was built. The Skate Court has been one of the most highly utilized features of the City of Olympia's recreational activities since it was opened.
McCormick Street Entrance to Watershed Park
In 2006, the PARC Foundation of Thurston County gave funds to support the development of an additional trail entrance into the City of Olympia's Watershed Park.
These funds came from a grant received by an Evergreen College Student for a different project in Watershed Park that did not occur. The funds were transferred from the grantor to the Foundation. PARC decided to grant the funds to support the development of the McCormick Street entrance into Watershed Park.
A little over $3,000 was donated to the project. The project was finished in Fall of 2006.
